Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in agronholm cbor2 up to 5.7.x. This affects an unknown code of the component CBOR Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper removal of sensitive information before storage or transfer vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-212. The product stores, transfers, or shares a resource that contains sensitive information, but it does not properly remove that information before the product makes the resource available to unauthorized actors. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
cbor2 provides encoding and decoding for the Concise Binary Object Representation (CBOR) serialization format. Starting in version 3.0.0 and prior to version 5.8.0, whhen a CBORDecoder instance is reused across multiple decode operations, values marked with the shareable tag (28) persist in memory and can be accessed by subsequent CBOR messages using the sharedref tag (29). This allows an attacker-controlled message to read data from previously decoded messages if the decoder is reused across trust boundaries. Version 5.8.0 patches the issue.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-68131 since 12/15/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
