The NeoScale Systems CryptoStor 700 series appliance before 2.6 relies on client-side ActiveX code for smartcard authentication, which allows remote attackers to bypass smartcard authentication, and gain access if able to present a valid username and password, by disabling ActiveX.

The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2006 by Will Dormann as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3896 since 07/26/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
