wolfSSL wolfSSL-py up to 5.8.2 Verify verify_mode missing authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in wolfSSL wolfSSL-py up to 5.8.2 and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Verify Handler. The manipulation of the argument verify_mode with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the handling of verify_mode = CERT_REQUIRED in the wolfssl Python package (wolfssl-py) causes client certificate requirements to not be fully enforced.  Because the WOLFSSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT flag was not included, the behavior effectively matched CERT_OPTIONAL: a peer certificate was verified if presented, but connections were incorrectly authenticated when no client certificate was provided.  This results in improper authentication, allowing attackers to bypass mutual TLS (mTLS) client authentication by omitting a client certificate during the TLS handshake.  The issue affects versions up to and including 5.8.2.

The weakness was shared by Matan Radomski. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-15346 since 12/30/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.8.4-stable eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch b4517dece79f682a8f453abce5cfc0b81bae769d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
