Details
A vulnerability was found in NASA CryptoLib up to 1.4.2. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function cryptography_encrypt of the component Link Security Protocol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
CryptoLib provides a software-only solution using the CCSDS Space Data Link Security Protocol - Extended Procedures (SDLS-EP) to secure communications between a spacecraft running the core Flight System (cFS) and a ground station. Prior to version 1.4.3, when the KMC server returns a non-200 HTTP status code, cryptography_encrypt() and cryptography_decrypt() return immediately without freeing previously allocated buffers. Each failed request leaks approximately 467 bytes. Repeated failures (from a malicious server or network issues) can gradually exhaust memory. This issue has been patched in version 1.4.3.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-22025 since 01/05/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 1.4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 2372efd3da1ccb226b4297222e25f41ecc84821d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-1891). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
