Linux Kernel up to 6.12.63/6.18.2/6.19-rc1 XE_IOCTL_DBG allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.63/6.18.2/6.19-rc1. This issue affects the function XE_IOCTL_DBG. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/xe/oa: Limit num_syncs to prevent oversized allocations The OA open parameters did not validate num_syncs, allowing userspace to pass arbitrarily large values, potentially leading to excessive allocations. Add check to ensure that num_syncs does not exceed DRM_XE_MAX_SYNCS, returning -EINVAL when the limit is violated. v2: use XE_IOCTL_DBG() and drop duplicated check. The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-71076 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 307549 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / 25.10 : Linux kernel (GCP) vulnerabilities (USN-8183-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.64, 6.18.3 or 6.19-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b963636331fb4f3f598d80492e2fa834757198eb/338849090ee610ff6d11e5e90857d2c27a4121ab/f8dd66bfb4e184c71bd26418a00546ebe7f5c17a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (307549) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0086). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
