Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.2. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function name_size. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tpm2-sessions: Fix out of range indexing in name_size 'name_size' does not have any range checks, and it just directly indexes with TPM_ALG_ID, which could lead into memory corruption at worst. Address the issue by only processing known values and returning -EINVAL for unrecognized values. Make also 'tpm_buf_append_name' and 'tpm_buf_fill_hmac_session' fallible so that errors are detected before causing any spurious TPM traffic. End also the authorization session on failure in both of the functions, as the session state would be then by definition corrupted.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-68792 since 12/24/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/27/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 300556 (openSUSE 16 Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2026:20287-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.18.3 or 6.19-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 04a3aa6e8c5f878cc51a8a1c90b6d3c54079bc43/6e9722e9a7bfe1bbad649937c811076acf86e1fd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
