Linux Kernel up to 6.19-rc3 ASIX Driver mdio_bus.c asix_read_phy_addr information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.159/6.6.119/6.12.63/6.18.3/6.19-rc3. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function asix_read_phy_addr of the file drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c of the component ASIX Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: asix: validate PHY address before use The ASIX driver reads the PHY address from the USB device via asix_read_phy_addr(). A malicious or faulty device can return an invalid address (>= PHY_MAX_ADDR), which causes a warning in mdiobus_get_phy(): addr 207 out of range WARNING: drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c:76 Validate the PHY address in asix_read_phy_addr() and remove the now-redundant check in ax88172a.c.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-71094 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298917 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2026:0472-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.160, 6.6.120, 6.12.64, 6.18.4 or 6.19-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f5f4f30f3811d37e1aa48667c36add74e5a8d99f/38722e69ee64dbb020028c93898d25d6f4c0e0b2/98a12c2547a44a5f03f35c108d2022cc652cbc4d/bf8a0f3b787ca7c5889bfca12c60c483041fbee3/a1e077a3f76eea0dc671ed6792e7d543946227e8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
