Details
A vulnerability has been found in Trend Micro Scan Engine and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file Tmxpflt.sys of the component Scan Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Trend Micro AntiVirus scan engine before 8.550-1001, as used in Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007, and Tmxpflt.sys 8.320.1004 and 8.500.0.1002, has weak permissions (Everyone:Write) for the \\.\Tmfilter device, which allows local users to send arbitrary content to the device via the IOCTL functionality. NOTE: this can be leveraged for privilege escalation by exploiting a buffer overflow in the handler for IOCTL 0xa0284403.
The weakness was published 10/26/2007 by Rubén Santamarta (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at esupport.trendmicro.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4277 since 08/09/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27583 (Trend Micro Scan Engine Tmxpflt.sys Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
