FreeRDP up to 3.20.x gdi_SurfaceToSurface heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FreeRDP up to 3.20.x. Affected is the function gdi_SurfaceToSurface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to version 3.21.0, a client-side heap buffer overflow occurs in the FreeRDP client’s `gdi_SurfaceToSurface` path due to a mismatch between destination rectangle clamping and the actual copy size. A malicious server can trigger a client‑side heap buffer overflow, causing a crash (DoS) and potential heap corruption with code‑execution risk depending on allocator behavior and surrounding heap layout. Version 3.21.0 contains a patch for the issue.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-23532 since 01/13/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297109 (TencentOS Server 4: freerdp (TSSA-2026:0039)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.21.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (297109), EUVD (EUVD-2026-3316) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0145). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
