Anthropic claude-code up to 2.0.64 insufficiently protected credentials

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Anthropic claude-code up to 2.0.64. It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insufficiently protected credentials vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-522. The product transmits or stores authentication credentials, but it uses an insecure method that is susceptible to unauthorized interception and/or retrieval. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool. Prior to version 2.0.65, vulnerability in Claude Code's project-load flow allowed malicious repositories to exfiltrate data including Anthropic API keys before users confirmed trust. An attacker-controlled repository could include a settings file that sets ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to an attacker-controlled endpoint and when the repository was opened, Claude Code would read the configuration and immediately issue API requests before showing the trust prompt, potentially leaking the user's API keys. Users on standard Claude Code auto-update have received this fix already. Users performing manual updates are advised to update to version 2.0.65, which contains a patch, or to the latest version.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-21852 since 01/05/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 305985 (Anthropic Claude Code < 2.0.65 API Key Leak via Project Settings (CVE-2026-21852)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 2.0.65 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (305985) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-3597). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
