Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.119/6.12.63/6.18.3/6.19-rc3. This vulnerability affects the function get_file_all_info of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: Fix memory leak in get_file_all_info() In get_file_all_info(), if vfs_getattr() fails, the function returns immediately without freeing the allocated filename, leading to a memory leak. Fix this by freeing the filename before returning in this error case.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-71153 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 296400 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-71153), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.120, 6.12.64, 6.18.4 or 6.19-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5012b4c812230ae066902a00442708c999111183/676907004256e0226c7ed3691db9f431404ca258/d026f47db68638521df8543535ef863814fb01b1/0c56693b06a68476ba113db6347e7897475f9e4c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
