Linux Kernel up to 6.19-rc1 ksmbd reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.159/6.6.119/6.12.63/6.18.2/6.19-rc1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: Fix refcount leak when invalid session is found on session lookup When a session is found but its state is not SMB2_SESSION_VALID, It indicates that no valid session was found, but it is missing to decrement the reference count acquired by the session lookup, which results in a reference count leak. This patch fixes the issue by explicitly calling ksmbd_user_session_put to release the reference to the session.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-71150 since 01/13/2026. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 296403 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-71150), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.160, 6.6.120, 6.12.64, 6.18.3 or 6.19-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0fb87b28cafae71e9c8248432cc3a6a1fd759efc/e54fb2a4772545701766cba08aab20de5eace8cd/8cabcb4dd3dc85dd83a37d26efcc59a66a4074d7/cafb57f7bdd57abba87725eb4e82bbdca4959644 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
