Summary
A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Protobuf V33.0. Affected by this vulnerability is the function google.protobuf.json_format.ParseDict. Executing a manipulation can lead to recursion.
This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-0994. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Protobuf V33.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function google.protobuf.json_format.ParseDict. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a recursion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-674. The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerability exists in google.protobuf.json_format.ParseDict() in Python, where the max_recursion_depth limit can be bypassed when parsing nested google.protobuf.Any messages. Due to missing recursion depth accounting inside the internal Any-handling logic, an attacker can supply deeply nested Any structures that bypass the intended recursion limit, eventually exhausting Python’s recursion stack and causing a RecursionError.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-0994 since 01/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
