Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.19-rc4. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function update_eth_regs_async of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: pegasus: fix memory leak in update_eth_regs_async() When asynchronously writing to the device registers and if usb_submit_urb() fail, the code fail to release allocated to this point resources.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-23021 since 01/13/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297455 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23021), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.248, 5.15.198, 6.1.161, 6.6.121, 6.12.66, 6.18.6 or 6.19-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5397ea6d21c35a17707e201a60761bdee00bcc4e/a40af9a2904a1ab8ce61866ebe2a894ef30754ba/ac5d92d2826dec51e5d4c6854865bc5817277452/93f18eaa190374e0f2d253e3b1a65cee19a7abe6/471dfb97599eec74e0476046b3ef8e7037f27b34/ce6eef731aba23a988decea1df3b08cf978f7b01/afa27621a28af317523e0836dad430bec551eb54 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (297455), EUVD (EUVD-2026-5073) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0280). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
