Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.5/6.19-rc4. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gpio_mpsse_probe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: mpsse: fix reference leak in gpio_mpsse_probe() error paths The reference obtained by calling usb_get_dev() is not released in the gpio_mpsse_probe() error paths. Fix that by using device managed helper functions. Also remove the usb_put_dev() call in the disconnect function since now it will be released automatically.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-23015 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297483 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23015), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
