Linux Kernel up to 6.6.121/6.12.66/6.18.6/6.19-rc5 dmaengine allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.121/6.12.66/6.18.6/6.19-rc5. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component dmaengine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dmaengine: stm32: dmamux: fix device leak on route allocation Make sure to drop the reference taken when looking up the DMA mux platform device during route allocation. Note that holding a reference to a device does not prevent its driver data from going away so there is no point in keeping the reference.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-71186 since 01/31/2026. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297486 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-71186), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.122, 6.12.67, 6.18.7 or 6.19-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1a179ac01ff3993ab97e33cc77c316ed7415cda1/2fb10259d4efb4367787b5ae9c94192e8a91c648/3ef52d31cce8ba816739085a61efe07b63c6cf27/dd6e4943889fb354efa3f700e42739da9bddb6ef is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (297486), EUVD (EUVD-2025-206589) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0280). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
