Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.67/6.18.7/6.19-rc5/6.19-rc6 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function gs_usb_receive_bulk_callback. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: gs_usb: gs_usb_receive_bulk_callback(): unanchor URL on usb_submit_urb() error In commit 7352e1d5932a ("can: gs_usb: gs_usb_receive_bulk_callback(): fix URB memory leak"), the URB was re-anchored before usb_submit_urb() in gs_usb_receive_bulk_callback() to prevent a leak of this URB during cleanup. However, this patch did not take into account that usb_submit_urb() could fail. The URB remains anchored and usb_kill_anchored_urbs(&parent->rx_submitted) in gs_can_close() loops infinitely since the anchor list never becomes empty. To fix the bug, unanchor the URB when an usb_submit_urb() error occurs, also print an info message.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-23082 since 01/13/2026. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298328 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23082), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.68, 6.18.8, 6.19-rc6 or 6.19-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ce4352057fc5a986c76ece90801b9755e7c6e56c/c610b550ccc0438d456dfe1df9f4f36254ccaae3/c3edc14da81a8d8398682f6e4ab819f09f37c0b7/79a6d1bfe1148bc921b8d7f3371a7fbce44e30f7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (298328) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0324). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
