Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.121/6.12.67/6.18.7/6.19-rc6. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function open of the component intel_th. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: intel_th: fix device leak on output open() Make sure to drop the reference taken when looking up the th device during output device open() on errors and on close(). Note that a recent commit fixed the leak in a couple of open() error paths but not all of them, and the reference is still leaking on successful open().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-23091 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297873 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23091), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.122, 6.12.68, 6.18.8 or 6.19-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability.
