Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.5/6.19-rc4 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function idpf_idc_vport_dev_down of the component idpf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: idpf: fix aux device unplugging when rdma is not supported by vport If vport flags do not contain VIRTCHNL2_VPORT_ENABLE_RDMA, driver does not allocate vdev_info for this vport. This leads to kernel NULL pointer dereference in idpf_idc_vport_dev_down(), which references vdev_info for every vport regardless. Check, if vdev_info was ever allocated before unplugging aux device.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-23042 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297914 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23042), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
