Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.121/6.12.67/6.18.7/6.19-rc6. Affected is the function cdev_device_add of the component uacce. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: uacce: fix cdev handling in the cleanup path When cdev_device_add fails, it internally releases the cdev memory, and if cdev_device_del is then executed, it will cause a hang error. To fix it, we check the return value of cdev_device_add() and clear uacce->cdev to avoid calling cdev_device_del in the uacce_remove.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-23096 since 01/13/2026. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/03/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 297967 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23096), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.122, 6.12.68, 6.18.8 or 6.19-rc7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d9031575a2f8aabc53af3025dd79af313a2e046b/98d67a1bd6caddd0a8b8c82a0b925742cf500936/bd2393ed7712513e7e2dbcb6e21464a67ff9e702/a3bece3678f6c88db1f44c602b2a63e84b4040ac is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (297967) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0324). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
