A vulnerability was found in PHP 4.4.7/5.2.3 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function htmlentities. The (1) session_save_path, (2) ini_set, and (3) error_log functions in PHP 4.4.7 and earlier, and PHP 5 5.2.3 and earlier, when invoked from a .htaccess file, allow remote attackers to bypass safe_mode and open_basedir restrictions and possibly execute arbitrary commands, as demonstrated using (a) php_value, (b) php_flag, and (c) directives in .htaccess.

The weakness was presented 11/12/2007 by Rasmus Lerdorf (shinnai) (Website). The advisory is shared at php.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3378 since 06/25/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
