libjxl up to 0.11.1 buffer access with incorrect length value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in libjxl up to 0.11.1. This vulnerability affects unknown code. The manipulation results in buffer access with incorrect length value. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-1837. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in libjxl up to 0.11.1. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer access with incorrect length value vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-805. The product uses a sequential operation to read or write a buffer, but it uses an incorrect length value that causes it to access memory that is outside of the bounds of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A specially-crafted file can cause libjxl's decoder to write pixel data to uninitialized unallocated memory. Soon after that data from another uninitialized unallocated region is copied to pixel data. This can be done by requesting color transformation of grayscale images to another grayscale color space. Buffers allocated for 1-float-per-pixel are used as if they are allocated for 3-float-per-pixel. That happens only if LCMS2 is used as CMS engine. There is another CMS engine available (selected by build flags).

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-1837 since 02/03/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/12/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298709 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-1837), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (298709). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
