Linux Kernel up to 6.12.67/6.18.7 dpll _add reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.67/6.18.7. Affected by this issue is the function _add of the component dpll. The manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-23129. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.67/6.18.7. This issue affects the function _add of the component dpll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dpll: Prevent duplicate registrations Modify the internal registration helpers dpll_xa_ref_{dpll,pin}_add() to reject duplicate registration attempts. Previously, if a caller attempted to register the same pin multiple times (with the same ops, priv, and cookie) on the same device, the core silently increments the reference count and return success. This behavior is incorrect because if the caller makes these duplicate registrations then for the first one dpll_pin_registration is allocated and for others the associated dpll_pin_ref.refcount is incremented. During the first unregistration the associated dpll_pin_registration is freed and for others WARN is fired. Fix this by updating the logic to return `-EEXIST` if a matching registration is found to enforce a strict "register once" policy.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-23129 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 299219 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23129), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.68 or 6.18.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dfec0501dba8f4711ef142a6a890e4812b7af88c/236a657422a564859dcd0db7bdb486abb21a721a/f3ddbaaaaf4d0633b40482f471753f9c71294a4a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
