Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenClaw, Clawdbot and Moltbot up to 2026.2.12 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenClaw is a personal AI assistant. In versions 2026.1.12 through 2026.2.12, OpenClaw browser download helpers accepted an unsanitized output path. When invoked via the browser control gateway routes, this allowed path traversal to write downloads outside the intended OpenClaw temp downloads directory. This issue is not exposed via the AI agent tool schema (no `download` action). Exploitation requires authenticated CLI access or an authenticated gateway RPC token. Version 2026.2.13 fixes the issue.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-26972 since 02/16/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 299795 (OpenClaw < 2026.2.13 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 2026.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (299795). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
