ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-39/7.1.2-14 SIXEL Decoder integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-39/7.1.2-14. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component SIXEL Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40, a signed integer overflow vulnerability in ImageMagick's SIXEL decoder allows an attacker to trigger memory corruption and denial of service when processing a maliciously crafted SIXEL image file. The vulnerability occurs during buffer reallocation operations where pointer arithmetic using signed 32-bit integers overflows. Versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40 contain a patch.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-25970 since 02/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 300033 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-25970), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.9.13-40 or 7.1.2-15 eliminates this vulnerability.
