Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-39/7.1.2-14. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40, a heap buffer over-read vulnerability exists in the DJVU image format handler. The vulnerability occurs due to integer truncation when calculating the stride (row size) for pixel buffer allocation. The stride calculation overflows a 32-bit signed integer, resulting in an out-of-bounds memory reads. Versions 7.1.2-15 and 6.9.13-40 contain a patch.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-27799 since 02/24/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 300204 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-27799), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.9.13-40 or 7.1.2-15 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (300204). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
