Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Grichter Apache::SessionX up to 2.01 on Perl. This affects the function rand of the component Default Session ID Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a generation of predictable numbers or identifiers vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-340. The product uses a scheme that generates numbers or identifiers that are more predictable than required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Apache::SessionX versions through 2.01 for Perl create insecure session id. Apache::SessionX generates session ids insecurely. The default session id generator in Apache::SessionX::Generate::MD5 returns a MD5 hash seeded with the built-in rand() function, the epoch time, and the PID. The PID will come from a small set of numbers, and the epoch time may be guessed, if it is not leaked from the HTTP Date header. The built-in rand function is unsuitable for cryptographic usage. Predicable session ids could allow an attacker to gain access to systems.
The weakness was shared by Robert Rothenberg. The advisory is shared at metacpan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-40932 since 04/16/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600.001 for this issue.
