The Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) feature in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7, when a primary DNS suffix with three or more components is configured, resolves an unqualified wpad hostname in a second-level domain outside this configured DNS domain, which allows remote WPAD servers to conduct man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
The bug was discovered 12/03/2007. The weakness was released 12/04/2007 by Beau Butler as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5355 since 10/10/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62055 (Microsoft Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
