Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in GStreamer. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component RIFF Palette Handler. The manipulation results in integer overflow. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-2921. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GStreamer (unknown version). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component RIFF Palette Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
GStreamer RIFF Palette Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation. The specific flaw exists within the handling of palette data in AVI files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before writing to memory. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-28854.
The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-2921. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
