FreeBSD rtsol/rtsold input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeBSD (unknown version). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component rtsol/rtsold. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The rtsol(8) and rtsold(8) programs do not validate the domain search list options provided in router advertisement messages; the option body is passed to resolvconf(8) unmodified. resolvconf(8) is a shell script which does not validate its input. A lack of quoting meant that shell commands pass as input to resolvconf(8) may be executed.

The weakness was presented by Kevin Day. It is possible to read the advisory at security.freebsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-14558 since 12/12/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (52463) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-208403). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
