Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-40/7.1.2-15 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component MNG Encoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to versions 7.1.2-16 and 6.9.13-41, a stack buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the MNG encoder. There is a bounds checks missing that could corrupting the stack with attacker-controlled data. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.1.2-16 and 6.9.13-41.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-28690 since 03/02/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
