The OLE Dialog component in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, and 2003 SP1 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an RTF file with a malformed OLE object that triggers memory corruption.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was shared 02/13/2007 by Kostya Kortchinsky with Immunity, Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0026 since 01/02/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2553 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24335 (MS07-011: Vulnerability in Microsoft OLE Dialog Could Allow Remote Code Execution (926436)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4900.
