ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-40/7.1.2-15 Image Parser stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.13-40/7.1.2-15 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Image Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-16 and 6.9.13-41, when a memory allocation fails in the sixel encoder it would be possible to write past the end of a buffer on the stack. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.1.2-16 and 6.9.13-41.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-32259 since 03/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 302171 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-32259), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.9.13-41 or 7.1.2-16 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at CNNVD (CNNVD-202603-2479), Tenable (302171) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0714). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
