Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Media Format Runtime 7.1, 9, 9.5, 9.5 x64 Edition, 11, and Windows Media Services 9.1 for Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, and Vista allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Advanced Systems Format (ASF) file.
The bug was discovered 12/11/2007. The weakness was published 12/11/2007 by Ryan Smith and Alex Wheeler with IBM X-Force as MS07-068 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0064 since 01/04/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-068 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
