A vulnerability was found in Xpression News 1.0.1. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file archives.php. The manipulation of the argument xnews-template with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in archives.php in Xpression News (X-News) 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to include arbitrary files or obtain sensitive information via a .. (dot dot) in the xnews-template parameter.
The weakness was disclosed 02/18/2007 by r0ut3r (Website). The advisory is shared at milw0rm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1040 since 02/21/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
