OpenClaw up to 2026.2.21 tools.exec.safeBins sort os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenClaw up to 2026.2.21. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function tools.exec.safeBins. The manipulation of the argument sort with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.2.22 contain an allowlist bypass vulnerability in the safeBins configuration that allows attackers to invoke external helpers through the compress-program option. When sort is explicitly added to tools.exec.safeBins, remote attackers can bypass intended safe-bin approval constraints by leveraging the compress-program parameter to execute unauthorized external programs.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-22169 since 01/06/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 2026.2.22 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 57fbbaebca4d34d17549accf6092ae26eb7b605c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
