OpenClaw up to 2026.2.22 Environment Variable /opt/homebrew/bin SHELL inclusion of functionality from untrusted control sphere

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in OpenClaw up to 2026.2.22. This affects an unknown function of the file /opt/homebrew/bin of the component Environment Variable Handler. The manipulation of the argument SHELL with an unknown input leads to a inclusion of functionality from untrusted control sphere vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-829. The product imports, requires, or includes executable functionality (such as a library) from a source that is outside of the intended control sphere. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenClaw version 2026.2.22 prior to 2026.2.23 contains an arbitrary code execution vulnerability in shell-env that allows attackers to execute attacker-controlled binaries by exploiting trusted-prefix fallback logic for the $SHELL variable. An attacker can influence the $SHELL environment variable on systems with writable trusted-prefix directories such as /opt/homebrew/bin to execute arbitrary binaries in the OpenClaw process context.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-22217 since 01/06/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
