Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.76/6.18.16/6.19.6/7.0-rc1. This impacts the function ieee80211_ml_reconfiguration of the component wifi. Performing a manipulation of the argument link_id results in out-of-bounds.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-23246. No exploit is available.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.76/6.18.16/6.19.6/7.0-rc1. This affects the function ieee80211_ml_reconfiguration of the component wifi. The manipulation of the argument link_id with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: bounds-check link_id in ieee80211_ml_reconfiguration link_id is taken from the ML Reconfiguration element (control & 0x000f), so it can be 0..15. link_removal_timeout[] has IEEE80211_MLD_MAX_NUM_LINKS (15) elements, so index 15 is out-of-bounds. Skip subelements with link_id >= IEEE80211_MLD_MAX_NUM_LINKS to avoid a stack out-of-bounds write.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-23246 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 302910 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-23246), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.77, 6.18.17, 6.19.7 or 7.0-rc2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bfde158d5d1322c0c2df398a8d1ccce04943be2e/f35ceec54d48e227fa46f8f97fd100a77b8eab15/d58d71c2167601762351962b9604808d3be94400/162d331d833dc73a3e905a24c44dd33732af1fc5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (302910), EUVD (EUVD-2026-12809) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0774). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
