Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.9. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function io_req_rw_cleanup of the component io_uring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: io_uring/rw: free potentially allocated iovec on cache put failure If a read/write request goes through io_req_rw_cleanup() and has an allocated iovec attached and fails to put to the rw_cache, then it may end up with an unaccounted iovec pointer. Have io_rw_recycle() return whether it recycled the request or not, and use that to gauge whether to free a potential iovec or not.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-23259 since 01/13/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.18.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1d5f2329ab4df65c2ee011b986d8a6e05ad0f67c/4b9748055457ac3a0710bf210c229d01ea1b01b9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
