Details
A vulnerability has been found in wolfSSL up to 5.8.x on RISC-V and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __muldi3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information exposure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-203. The product behaves differently or sends different responses under different circumstances in a way that is observable to an unauthorized actor, which exposes security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
wolfSSL 5.8.4 on RISC-V RV32I architectures lacks a constant-time software implementation for 64-bit multiplication. The compiler-inserted __muldi3 subroutine executes in variable time based on operand values. This affects multiple SP math functions (sp_256_mul_9, sp_256_sqr_9, etc.), leading to a timing side-channel that may expose sensitive cryptographic data.
The weakness was released by Wind Wong. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-3579 since 03/05/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 303110 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-3579), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
