Details
A vulnerability has been found in wolfSSL up to 5.8.x and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function wc_PKCS7_DecodeEnvelopedData of the component CMS EnvelopedData Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
1-byte OOB heap read in wc_PKCS7_DecodeEnvelopedData via zero-length encrypted content. A vulnerability existed in wolfSSL 5.8.4 and earlier, where a 1-byte out-of-bounds heap read in wc_PKCS7_DecodeEnvelopedData could be triggered by a crafted CMS EnvelopedData message with zero-length encrypted content. Note that PKCS7 support is disabled by default.
The weakness was disclosed by Haruto Kimura. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-4159 since 03/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
