Details
A vulnerability was found in go-vikunja vikunja up to 2.1.x. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Vikunja is an open-source self-hosted task management platform. Starting in version 0.21.0 and prior to version 2.2.0, the Vikunja Desktop Electron wrapper enables `nodeIntegration` in the renderer process without `contextIsolation` or `sandbox`. This means any cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Vikunja web frontend -- present or future -- automatically escalates to full remote code execution on the victim's machine, as injected scripts gain access to Node.js APIs. Version 2.2.0 fixes the issue.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-33334 since 03/18/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
Upgrading to version 2.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at vikunja.io.
