Linux Kernel up to 7.0-rc2 ems_usb_read_bulk_callback buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ems_usb_read_bulk_callback. Performing a manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-23307. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.0-rc2. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function ems_usb_read_bulk_callback. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: ems_usb: ems_usb_read_bulk_callback(): check the proper length of a message When looking at the data in a USB urb, the actual_length is the size of the buffer passed to the driver, not the transfer_buffer_length which is set by the driver as the max size of the buffer. When parsing the messages in ems_usb_read_bulk_callback() properly check the size both at the beginning of parsing the message to make sure it is big enough for the expected structure, and at the end of the message to make sure we don't overflow past the end of the buffer for the next message.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-23307 since 01/13/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/30/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.167, 6.6.130, 6.12.77, 6.18.17, 6.19.7 or 7.0-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c703bbf8e9b4947e111c88d2ed09236a6772a471/1818974e1b5ef200e27f144c8cb8a246420bb54d/18f75b9cbdc3703f15965425ab69dee509b07785/1cf469026d4a2308eaa91d04dca4a900d07a5c2e/2833e13e2b099546abf5d40a483b4eb04ddd1f7b/38a01c9700b0dcafe97dfa9dc7531bf4a245deff is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0861). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
