Details
A vulnerability was found in nats-io nats-server up to 2.11.14/2.12.5. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file /debug/vars. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insertion of sensitive information into debugging code vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-215. The product inserts sensitive information into debugging code, which could expose this information if the debugging code is not disabled in production. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
NATS-Server is a High-Performance server for NATS.io, a cloud and edge native messaging system. Prior to versions 2.11.15 and 2.12.6, if a nats-server is run with static credentials for all clients provided via argv (the command-line), then those credentials are visible to any user who can see the monitoring port, if that too is enabled. The `/debug/vars` end-point contains an unredacted copy of argv. Versions 2.11.15 and 2.12.6 contain a fix. As a workaround, configure credentials inside a configuration file instead of via argv, and do not enable the monitoring port if using secrets in argv. Best practice remains to not expose the monitoring port to the Internet, or to untrusted network sources.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-33247 since 03/18/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
