Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in path-to-regexp up to 8.3.x. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Impact: A bad regular expression is generated any time you have multiple sequential optional groups (curly brace syntax), such as `{a}{b}{c}:z`. The generated regex grows exponentially with the number of groups, causing denial of service. Patches: Fixed in version 8.4.0. Workarounds: Limit the number of sequential optional groups in route patterns. Avoid passing user-controlled input as route patterns.
The advisory is shared for download at cna.openjsf.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-4926 since 03/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely.
