Metabase up to 1.59.3 Serialization Import Endpoint import deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This impacts an unknown function of the file /api/ee/serialization/import of the component Serialization Import Endpoint. This manipulation causes deserialization. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-33725. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Metabase up to 1.59.3. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file /api/ee/serialization/import of the component Serialization Import Endpoint. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Metabase is an open source business intelligence and embedded analytics tool. In Metabase Enterprise prior to versions 1.54.22, 1.55.22, 1.56.22, 1.57.16, 1.58.10, and 1.59.4, authenticated admins on Metabase Enterprise Edition can achieve Remote Code Execution (RCE) and Arbitrary File Read via the `POST /api/ee/serialization/import` endpoint. A crafted serialization archive injects an `INIT` property into the H2 JDBC spec, which can execute arbitrary SQL during a database sync. We confirmed this was possible on Metabase Cloud. This only affects Metabase Enterprise. Metabase OSS lacks the affected codepaths. All versions of Metabase Enterprise that have serialization, which dates back to at least version 1.47, are affected. Metabase Enterprise versions 1.54.22, 1.55.22, 1.56.22, 1.57.16, 1.58.10, and 1.59.4 patch the issue. As a workaround, disable the serialization import endpoint in their Metabase instance to prevent access to the vulnerable codepaths.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-33725 since 03/23/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 304390 (Metabase Enterprise < 1.54.22 / 1.55.x < 1.55.22 / 1.56.x < 1.56.22 / 1.57.x < 1.57.16 / 1.58.x < 1.58.10 / 1.59.x < 1.59.4 RCE (GHSA-fppj-vcm3-w229)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.54.22, 1.55.22, 1.56.22, 1.57.16, 1.58.10 or 1.59.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (304390). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
