ticalc Texas Instrument Emulator 3.03 Command-Line Interface ROM path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ticalc Texas Instrument Emulator 3.03 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Command-Line Interface. The manipulation of the argument ROM with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

TiEmu 3.03-nogdb+dfsg-3 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability in the ROM parameter handling that allows local attackers to crash the application or execute arbitrary code. Attackers can supply an oversized ROM parameter to the tiemu command-line interface to overflow the stack buffer and overwrite the instruction pointer with malicious addresses.

The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-20040 since 03/28/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 304206 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2016-20040), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39692), Tenable (304206) and EUVD (EUVD-2016-10835). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
