OpenSC up to 0.26.x USB stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSC up to 0.26.x. This affects an unknown code of the component USB Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenSC is an open source smart card tools and middleware. Prior to version 0.27.0, an attacker with physical access to the computer at the time user or administrator uses a token can cause a stack-buffer-overflow write in GET RESPONSE. The attack requires crafted USB device or smart card that would present the system with specially crafted responses to the APDUs. This issue has been patched in version 0.27.0.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-49010 since 05/29/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally.
