Details
A vulnerability has been found in PX4 Autopilot 1.16.0 SITL and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component MAVLink Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The MAVLink communication protocol does not require cryptographic authentication by default. When MAVLink 2.0 message signing is not enabled, any message -- including SERIAL_CONTROL, which provides interactive shell access -- can be sent by an unauthenticated party with access to the MAVLink interface. PX4 provides MAVLink 2.0 message signing as the cryptographic authentication mechanism for all MAVLink communication. When signing is enabled, unsigned messages are rejected at the protocol level.
The weakness was published by Dolev Aviv. The advisory is shared at docs.px4.io. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-1579 since 01/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy.
