Sun Solaris 8/9/10 UTF-8 Parser Libxml2 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The xmlCurrentChar function in libxml2 before 2.6.31 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via XML containing invalid UTF-8 sequences.

The bug was discovered 12/17/2007. The weakness was disclosed 01/15/2008 by Patrick with Sun (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-6284 since 12/10/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67637 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : libxml2 (ELSA-2008-0032)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:002)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39610), Tenable (67637), SecurityFocus (BID 27248†), OSVDB (40194†) and Secunia (SA29591†). The entries VDB-3410, VDB-37647, VDB-39622 and VDB-39621 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
